๐ก About Facebook Link Sharing
When a URL is shared on Facebook โ whether in a post, a comment, or via Messenger โ Facebook's crawler (facebookexternalhit) fetches your page and reads its OpenGraph meta tags to build the link preview. The quality of your OG tags has a direct impact on engagement: posts with rich previews consistently outperform plain-URL posts in clicks and shares.
Facebook renders link cards in different layouts depending on context. The large image card (News Feed default) shows a full-width image above your domain, title, and description. The thumbnail card appears when sharing to specific groups or when no large image is detected. Messenger shows a compact card inside the chat bubble.
Facebook-specific tips:
- Image dimensions: 1200ร630px for large cards, 200ร200px minimum for thumbnail
- Facebook caches OG data aggressively โ use the Sharing Debugger to force a refresh after changes
- Title should be concise: Facebook truncates at ~65 characters in most views
- Include
og:urlto prevent Facebook from choosing a random canonical URL - Avoid misleading previews โ Facebook penalizes clickbait with reduced distribution
